RS, SS, MS or CSS? A practical guide to matching the emulsion grade to the aggregate, the weather and the job at hand.
Bitumen emulsions are not interchangeable. Each grade is formulated to set at a different speed and to bond with different surfaces, and choosing the wrong one costs time, material and sometimes the finished surface. The first question to answer is always how quickly the emulsion needs to set.
Setting speed comes first
- RS-1 and RS-2 (rapid setting): fast bonding, ideal for tack coats and surface dressing where setting time is critical to the schedule.
- SS-1 and SS-2 (slow setting): lower-viscosity emulsions for stabilising granular bases, fog seals and work that needs longer working time.
- MS (medium setting): designed for premix with coarser aggregates, balancing workability with a controlled setting time.
- CSS-1 and CSS-1H (cationic slow setting): for tack coats and slurry seals on positively charged aggregate surfaces.
- Cold Mix: a ready-to-use patching material for pothole repair and maintenance.
Match the grade to the job
Before you order, four questions usually settle it: what is the aggregate, what are the weather and surface conditions on the day, how soon must traffic return, and how will the emulsion be applied? A project that cannot afford to wait will lean towards rapid-setting grades. A granular base that needs mixing time will lean towards slow-setting ones.
The right grade is rarely the most expensive one. It is the one that matches the job.
Why consistent manufacturing matters
A grade is only useful if every delivery behaves the same way. GWC Asphalt produces its emulsions in a PLC-automated plant at Dudhnoi, Goalpara, with continuous recording of batch data, to Indian (IS) and international (ASTM) specifications, under an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality system.
If you are unsure which grade your project needs, GWC's support engineers can advise on application and recommend the right product for the right job.
